Describe what you did on the following days and if you had any particular reaction to those days’ events you would like to share
Monday
This morning, my Mom and I groomed one of our dogs because we don’t want to go to a groomer. It took over three hours to bathe, blow dry, and shave and cut his hair. I don’t know how groomers do these dogs so fast, but it is absolutely amazing. It must take an incredible amount of skill to be able to groom enough dogs in a day to actually make a profit. And we only did one dog today – we have two more.
Tuesday
Today, I was struck by how unbelievably lucky I am. I don’t need to worry about working during this time; I will be able to continue getting my education; and my family is healthy and in relatively good spirits. I’m in such a good position, and my heart aches for those who are not. There are so many people who are jobless, forced to work and endanger themselves and their families. There are many who are without health insurance or don’t know where their next meal is coming from. I am grateful for what I have, and I just keep trying to focus on making my little pocket of the world a good place for everyone else around me.
Wednesday
We went to the grocery store and there was a twelve pack of toilet paper on the shelf priced at $20. It was one of only three packs on the shelf at all. We didn’t buy it, because we’ve gotten lucky buying our toilet paper online, but this price-gouging has really gotten out of hand. Grapes were $4/pound which was crazy.
Thursday
Friday
My Mom cut my Dad’s hair again today. She might need to cut mine again, too. We’ve been watching a lot of TV and doing yardwork to keep busy.
Saturday
Sunday
We groomed another one of our dogs today, which thankfully, tired them out.
1) How are things going for you?
2) Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest
3) Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?
Fewer people are heeding social distancing recommendations this week. There have been many protests against policy brutality which leads to large crowds. Some are wearing masks, but the masks are not enough to protect against prolonged exposure.
4) Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
The state is trying to figure out how to send children back to public schools in the fall. One of the spokespeople said that a proposed bus route using optimal social distancing would take hours to run. There have been nationwide protests over police brutality including in Columbia. The mayor has imposed a 6pm curfew in downtown, but the majority of people are not leaving because they want to be heard.
5) Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
The United States has eclipsed over 100,000 deaths from coronavirus as of this week. There was an important space launch that has been delayed until Saturday. It will be the first time in history that a private company has lifted off from the United States using U.S. astronauts. The astronauts had to stay in self-quarantine for two months before the launch due to the virus. I can only image how disastrous it would be if they infected the crew of the International Space Station. They lifted off successfully this Saturday and arrived at the Station safely.
6) Is there anything else you would like to add?
