1)     Please describe any significant events that occurred this week and what you think about them

Coronavirus cases are rising dramatically again in 24 states and there is talk of returning to lockdown. Many universities are trying to come up with plans and options for reopening in the fall. USC is letting students choose if they want to come back to campus or go online for the semester. South Carolina has accumulated almost 700 deaths, and the percent positive in the state for Saturday was 18.4%. The city of Columbia has passed a mask ordinance which means people need to wear a mask when they are within city limits, however, civil officials are enforcing it and not police officers. Nationwide, there are now over 125,000 deaths and over 2 million have tested positive.

2)     Were there any significant changes between this week and last week?

Some states are starting to pause reopening efforts as cases spike. It seems like this may never end, but I know it’s only until a vaccine can be developed. I watched a short documentary series on Netflix about the trials and tests a vaccine has to go through to be approved by the FDA, and many vaccines have been speed-tracked to go ahead to human clinical trials. It will be interesting to see how fast a vaccine can be created, tested, and distributed to every country in the world and how global politics might factor in. The documentary was called Coronavirus, Explained.
