1) Please describe any significant events that occurred this week and what you think about them
There have been several major protests against police brutality this week in cities all across the country and the world. They always start off peaceful, but then rioters use the protests as a cover for violence, looting, and property damage. As the days have gone on, however, the media and many government officials have made it a point to create a distinction between the demonstrators and the rioters. This is important because it means that the message of the protests is not lost in the unrelated crimes that correlate with them. The four police officers who were involved in the death of George Floyd were fired and have been charged with his murder nine days after he died. I think the daily protests and outrage are what finally prompted the criminal justice system to take definitive action. The only issue with these protests is the fact that the world is still dealing with a pandemic caused by a highly contagious respiratory virus. Many of the demonstrators are wearing masks, but studies have proven that social distancing is most effective at preventing the spread of COVID-19. The masks do not do enough to protect the wearer from contracting COVID-19. Many health officials are worried that these protests will cause a spike in cases and deaths related to COVID-19.
2) Were there any significant changes between this week and last week?
There has been a spike in cases in the South, including South Carolina. Numbers went from around 100 new cases per day to between 300-500 new cases per day. South Carolina, along with several other states, were some of the first to end their stay-at-home orders and begin a focus on reopening the struggling economy.
