Monday
I had to fix the straps on my first face mask to make sure they wouldn’t fall apart.
Tuesday
My Mama and I went to the grocery store today. At Publix, they are enforcing one-directional shopping where you have to go up and down the aisles in a certain way. I also made another face mask. This one went a lot faster because I know how to make them now. I’m hoping I can make five or six more.
Wednesday
Mama cut Daddy’s hair today because the hair salons and barber shops are still closed. It actually went pretty well – she watched a bunch of YouTube videos before she started. A lot of YouTube channels have made videos on how to cut hair because everyone has to stay home. Of course, things are starting to open back up, but we aren’t going anywhere until the doctors give the okay.
Thursday
The days just seem to blur past with barely any mark of time passing. Now that finals are over, I am officially a sophomore.
Friday
I have three dogs and I’ve been getting to spend a lot of time with them during quarantine. I miss them when I’m at school, so it’s nice to get to be around them more. I just wish they wouldn’t bark at every person who passes our house.
Saturday
I started another face mask today. I’ve only got one edge hemmed down, but it just takes so long to make one mask by hand, and this fabric that I’m working with is difficult because it doesn’t keep a pressed edge very well. It’s still a good project though, and it keeps me busy.
Sunday
Today was Mother’s Day. We normally don’t do much on Mother’s and Father’s Day in my family, but today I baked my Mama her favorite cake and we binge watched True Blood on AppleTV. My Mama ordered some face masks off of Etsy as back-ups for the ones I’ve already made. She thinks that lots of places will start requiring them as the country reopens.
1) How are things going for you?
Pretty good. I’m still just cooped up in the house, but I’ve found lots of ways to pass the time.
2) Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest
3) Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?
States are starting to reopen and there is a lot of tension about who has the right to require people to wear face masks. Some people are really resistant to the idea of having to wear masks in public, and they just want to take their chances. I don’t think they realize that wearing the mask is to protect others if they are potentially shedding the virus, not themselves.
4) Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
5) Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
At the beginning of this week, one in five Americans are out of work. Many are struggling to obtain unemployment benefits because the system is so backlogged. During the Great Depression, one in four Americans couldn’t find work. I never thought I would see something like this in my lifetime, but then again, who does?
6) Is there anything else you would like to add?
