Sidney Busy, April 27 to May 3, 2020

Monday

I baked two loaves of banana bread today, but for some reason, they did not bake properly so the middle was raw. I had to throw them out. 4 cups of flour, 4 eggs, 2 cups of sugar, and two bananas, among other ingredients. I feel so wasteful about it, because there are people who are starving right now, but they were inedible.

Tuesday

The day flew by so fast.

Wednesday

I’ve spent a lot of time getting to know my neighbors because of the stay-at-home order. The family across the street has a daughter who is about 9-10 years old, and I spend an hour talking with her today. She is in the 4th grade and she has been doing all of her schoolwork using packets. Both of her parents are teachers, so I’m sure she gets lots of help, but it makes me think about all of the other students who are having to do packet-learning/online-learning at this time. That style can be really hard, especially for younger students or ones who have always had in-class instruction available.

Thursday

Friday

We went to Costco today and were able to score some toilet paper among other things. We wanted to go today because on May 4th they are going to start requiring customers to wear masks and we don’t have any masks at the moment. I just get so stressed when I go to the grocery store.

Saturday

My Nana came over and we chatted in the garage, six feet apart. I’m glad I got to see her, but I miss her hugs. I’d rather her be safe though.

Sunday

I hand sewed a face mask today. I’m going to make another one tomorrow and give both of them to my two older neighbors. After that, I will have enough material to make four more, one for each of my parents, my Nana, and myself.

1)     How are things going for you?

2)     Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest

3)     Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?

The new small business loan program dropped this Tuesday, and the same problems occurred as last time. The webpage keeps crashing because of the level of traffic. You would think that the government would have better software, or that they would at least update it after what happened last time.

People are protesting over social distancing rules in several states across the country.

4)     Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?

Restaurants are implementing several measures to protect employees and customers since South Carolina is slowly starting to reopen. There is only outdoor seating, and the employees must wear masks and gloves. I am not planning to go out for anything other than groceries until healthcare professionals give the green light. Testing has been made available in a hard-hit county of South Carolina and anyone can travel there and have a test done. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

5)     Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?

Many states are reopening even though they haven’t met federal guidelines for reopening which is a 14 decline in cases. Lots of beaches are reopening too, and people are flooding them as the weather gets hotter. Meat packing plants are shutting down because they are hotspots for COVID-19 which is causing a meat shortage. The lack of testing in many places is making it difficult to control the spread of the virus. 31 states including D.C. aren’t doing enough testing to reopen safely. The U.S. has nearly reached 60,000 deaths this Tuesday. There is a potential treatment (Remdesivir) that is being studied which has been found to cut recovery time for critical patients. We’re over 60,000 deaths this Wednesday.

6)     Is there anything else you would like to add?

When I heard that dogs could get COVID-19 from their humans and other dogs, I became afraid. I have three small dogs, and I don’t want them getting this virus any more than my parents or my Nana. My dogs are pretty much like my children to me.

This Sunday, cases seem to be surging all across the U.S. Today was the highest death toll at 2,909 deaths. People are protesting even more over COVID-19 restrictions. Some people are so desperate to get back to work and see the restrictions as too much government interference. I wish everyone could follow the orders until a vaccine can be developed, but I understand there are many who cannot afford to stay home under lockdown for another month. However, the only way we can truly beat this virus and return to full economic capacity is if a safe and effective vaccine can be developed which is likely to take up to 18 months.
