Monday
The masks I made held up in the wash which is good news because they take a lot of fabric to make 4-ply and a lot of time to hand sew. Now we can keep reusing them when we go to the grocery store.

Wednesday
Wow. Well, today was insane. This morning, around 10am, the neighbor called my Mama and asked her to come over because her husband was having trouble breathing. They are really close friends of ours, so I came too. My mom had me wetting a wash cloth with cold water to put on his neck while she stayed with him and his wife called 911. Once the paramedics came, they all had face shields and masks on, but it is rather difficult to keep 6 feet apart in a situation like this. After he was loaded into the ambulance, my mom drove his wife to the hospital. My mom couldn’t go in with her though because the hospital was limiting the amount of people coming into the hospital, so she had to go in alone and wait. She called my mom with updates and ended up confirming what my mom had deduced with his symptoms: he had had a major heart attack. Visiting hours ended at the hospital at noon, so my mom and I went to pick her up – she hadn’t been able to go see her husband even though he was out of surgery and in the ICU. Hopefully she will be able to see him tomorrow. I can’t believe this – he had just had his 81st birthday on Saturday. I just saw him yesterday when we were talking about his WW2 books. He looked so pale and out-of-it today – his recovery is going to take a long time.
Thursday
We took my neighbor to visiting hours and her brother came up from Georgia and picked her up, so he’ll be staying with her for a while. One of our other neighbors went out and cut her lawn for her because her husband usually does it. She’s looking into getting a lawn service because she just had eye surgery, and he won’t be able to do heavy yard work anymore. I’m just so glad he survived – I hope he comes home soon.
Friday
We haven’t been watching the news a lot lately, because most of the time it just feels like there is no light at the end of this tunnel. We are content to stay home as much as possible, wear face masks to the store, and wash our hands. My Dad and I went to the hardware store today, and they had an employee sitting outside with a clipboard counting the amount of people coming in and out of the store to make sure they don’t go over the capacity limit. Also, our neighbor’s husband came home today! He had color in his cheeks and he was joking like his usual self when we went to visit him and bring him flowers. He is on a heavily restrictive diet now and he won’t be able to yardwork anymore, but he’s alive!
Saturday
Today is my nineteenth birthday! Normally, my family takes me to a movie and then out to eat, but we decided to stay home instead. We rearranged the patio furniture on the screened-in porch so that my Nana was on one end and we were on the other to keep with social distancing. My Mom made her spaghetti sauce with meatballs and we ate together out on the porch. Our dogs came out and ran around in the sun. My Mom had bought an ice cream cake when we were at Publix the other day, and my Nana made a key lime cheesecake – needless to say, we were stuffed! I am so grateful that my family is healthy right now, and that we are in a position to have any kind of celebration. My Nana left after we ate and my Mom, Dad, and I watched Frozen because they had never seen it before. Tomorrow, we’ll watch Frozen II.
Sunday
My Dad and I did yardwork this morning. We’ve had a couple of heavy storms pass through our area, so a lot of our bark dust had run into the grass. We spent the morning raking it up and putting it back where it goes. My Dad helped our neighbor and her brother load their lawn mower into the back of his truck, because her husband will not be doing any heavy yardwork anymore.
1) How are things going for you?
Good – my family members are healthy and we continue to socially distance as much as possible.
2) Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest
3) Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?
The majority of states have started reopening businesses in hopes of jumpstarting the economy. Many doctors are worried that the numbers of cases will spike once the country has reopened. I hope it doesn’t, but I can’t ignore the science behind what they are saying. It will be interesting to see how the next couple of months go before classes start for the fall. I wonder what measures Lander will put into place to protect everyone. There is a new travel ban for Brazil to restrict the flow of people from there because it has the most cases after the U.S.
4) Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
There have been over 400 deaths related to COVID-19 in South Carolina. There has been a total of about 9,500 cases of coronavirus in total for South Carolina. The majority of businesses have reopened, but we haven’t gone anywhere.
5) Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
The United States has reached over 95,000 deaths and there are over 1.5 million cases of COVID-19. We are close to hitting the lowest possible projected death toll for the U.S. and it will probably soar higher. Many people are not adhering to social distancing laws. Some states that have ended their stay-at-home orders have reported an increased number of cases. There was a news story about two hairstylists working at a Great Clips who had symptoms but came into work anyways. They are now connected to almost 150 other positive cases.
6) Is there anything else you would like to add?
