Monday

The governor of SC issued a stay-at-home order, finally. People can be fined for being out without good reason. It feels strange to be happy about my basic rights being restricted, but people don’t listen to reason, and if this is what it takes to end this pandemic with as few deaths as possible, so be it. The British Prime Minister went to the hospital because his COVID-19 symptoms were starting to get much worse. A world leader, down and out.

Tuesday

My family has been trying to avoid watching the news every day, because it isn’t good for our mental health. My Dad wanted to go out and pick up a gun safe he had ordered from a Cabela’s that was almost two hours away, so my Mama made us all watch the news last night, so we wouldn’t forget what’s going on outside the house. My Dad changed his mind.

Wednesday

A couple of weeks ago, my Mama and I went to the grocery store before all of the stay-at-home orders went into effect. All the toilet paper was already gone from the store, and we had enough for the moment, so I wasn’t particularly worried. Also, people have been going to the bathroom for thousands upon thousands of years and toilet paper hasn’t always been around. Anyway, my Mama decided to buy a couple of non-flushable baby wipes since we couldn’t find toilet paper, and I felt so embarrassed. Not because they were baby wipes, but because we literally did not need them, and what if there was a person out there looking for baby wipes for their child and we (adults) took the last ones out of panic.

Thursday

I picked up pinecones for my neighbor that we are friends with this morning. They have a lot behind their house with lots of pine trees and those trees drop crazy amounts of pinecones. They are older and have trouble moving around, so I just pretended to pick up the pinecones in my yard (there weren’t very many) before moving on to their lot. I only got a third of the lot this morning before it started getting too hot, but it made me feel good to go outside and be helpful.

Friday

My dad likes to do yardwork, and is very proud of his lawn. Lots of people compliment him on it because it is so green and manicured, but it just makes my Mama and I laugh because he gets really unbearable over his grass – it’s kind of ridiculous. However, I noticed that people stand apart from each other when they talk for social distancing now. My dad and the neighbors are always at least six feet apart, mostly they just shout from the street. It’s really weird.

Saturday

My Mama and I went to the grocery store this afternoon to try and pick up two weeks-worth of groceries and to shop for my Nana. I almost went by myself to limit the number of people leaving the house, but I had an anxiety attack at the thought of going alone so my Mama came with me. I’m the healthiest, so it would have been better if it was just me but to be honest, I’m glad she was there. When we got back home, we sanitized all of items and my dad put them away. I washed my hands and took a nap – I couldn’t focus on schoolwork.

Sunday

My neighbor is Catholic, and she and her husband couldn’t go to Easter mass today because services have been cancelled until further notice. Her family normally comes down, too, and she cooks Easter dinner for them. Instead, it’s just her and her husband this year. My Mama called her on the phone and they chatted for a good while. The neighbor baked a carrot cake and shared it with us, so I went over and picked it up to bring home. It was so nice of her to share it with us. I picked up the rest of the pinecones in their lot this morning before the rain hit.

1)     How are things going for you?

I feel stressed out and helpless over this, so I try not to watch the news too much.

2)     Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest.

3)     Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?

The death toll has tripled in the U.S. over the past week, and it feels incredibly surreal. I am so thankful that my family is safe right now, and we are doing everything we can to protect ourselves and those around us through hand washing and social distancing.

4)     Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?

The governor issued a stay-at-home/work-from-home order in South Carolina.

5)     Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?

The death count has reached 12,000 in the U.S. I remember when that first happened in Italy, and I had trouble processing that number. Now, it has happened in the U.S. too, and I am still astounded by the number. Experts are saying the low side might be 100,000-200,000 deaths in the U.S. alone, millions at the highest. The death count has now reached 21,000 in the United States, but it seems to be hitting a plateau in New York which is good.

6)     Is there anything else you would like to add?
