Wednesday

My Mama and I went to the grocery store today. It is so stressful. We had to think about what we might want or need two weeks from now. Just about everyone was wearing face masks and gloves. When we got home, my Dad and I washed all of the produce while my Mama showered. I stopped cutting up the strawberries because my hands were shaking and washed the apples instead. After I showered, I took a three-hour nap and I felt better. I just hate going to the grocery store right now.

Thursday

I’ve been doing a lot of baking recently because of all the staying inside. My neighbors are saying that I should open a baked goods shop with all of the cookies, cakes, and breads I’ve been making. Every time I go to one of my older neighbor’s house with a plate of cookies, her husband literally whoops with joy when he sees me in the doorway, and she’s happy because she doesn’t have to worry about baking to sate his sweet tooth. I think I’m going to make cupcakes next – just have to figure out how to store them.

Friday

I wrote back my best friend today. All of her siblings sent me notes too, so I wrote them back as well. I miss everyone so much. When I hear about the governors or mayors in different states and cities reopening too soon, it makes me so sad. This pandemic is going to be never ending unless we use our common sense and stay at home.

Saturday

The president made a “joke” about injecting home cleaning disinfectants while addressing the American people in a briefing and all I can do is just shake my head.

Sunday

I heard that COVID is probably coming back in the fall. I wonder if we will ever be able to go back to school. I love being home, but I miss my friends and being independent. This whole semester has been a mess for me, but I’m trying to stay positive.

-        I’m sorry not all of the days are filled out for this week. I feel like I am in such a monotonous cycle of existence right now that sometimes the days blend together.

1)     How are things going for you?

I’m doing pretty good. I just feel tired a lot, even when I get enough sleep.

2)     Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest

3)     Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?

People are getting so antsy to reopen the economy. Small businesses are suffering and many of them can’t survive being closed for more than another month or two. People are having to lay off all of their employees, especially because many small businesses were not able to take advantage of the Paycheck Protection Program before the hundreds of billions of dollars were drained dry. There is another stimulus package that finally got through Congress this week, and hopefully, more small businesses can take advantage of it. The problem, however, is if the economy opens too soon and the stay-at-home orders are lifted there is a likely to be another spike in COVID-19 cases.

4)     Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?

The governor is reopening many retail businesses to try and keep the economy from slipping too far, but I’m not sure if that is completely wise because health professionals haven’t said anything about it being safe yet. The unemployment offices are completely overwhelmed. There are over 341,000 claims for unemployment in South Carolina. There are almost 5,000 cases of COVID-19 in South Carolina.

5)     Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?

There have been over 40,000 deaths due to COVID-19 in the United States starting this week. There are now over 47,000 deaths for the United states as of this Thursday. We’re nearing 50,000 deaths. There have also been 4.4 million unemployment claims nationwide. We’ve hit 50,000 deaths as of Friday.

6)     Is there anything else you would like to add?
