Monday
It was my best friend’s birthday today, but I couldn’t go and see her because of corona. I sent her a card and she loved it, so at least there’s that.
Tuesday
Today, my dogs had a vet appointment to get some vaccinations. We drove up to the vet office and they took each one inside and brought them back out to us. That was weird. I brought our neighbor paper towels and bleach because the store is running low on bleach and there are no paper towels.
Wednesday
My best friend sent me a letter and I got it today! It had little notes and pictures from all of her younger siblings too, which were super adorable. I miss them all so much. I’m going to write them all back.
Thursday
One of my professors lives in Greenville near Clemson and she sent out an email to our classes saying that her house has no power because of the tornadoes that touched down on Monday. She has to charge her phone in her car and do all of her work of off her phone. I feel so bad for her. She lives alone and I know that quarantine must be affecting her a lot.
Friday
I delivered a letter to my Nana today when we went to go drop off some stuff at her house. I have recently stopped using my phone, so I haven’t been able to text her. Everyone is worried about getting their relief checks from the government. My parents already got theirs, but my Nana hasn’t yet.
Saturday
I washed the windows today, inside and out. It felt good to do something productive and the windows are all very sparkly now. I also used a razor blade to scrape paint overspray off of the window panels on the front door which was tedious to say the least, but it’s been two years since we moved into this house and it definitely needed to be done. To be honest, I feel as though I have been really productive during quarantine.
Sunday
My parents and I watched the One World: Together at Home show which had a bunch of celebrities, musicians, comedians, and health professionals to sing, give words of hope, or tips on staying healthy. It was a really good show and we enjoyed it. This pandemic has affected so many people in many different ways, and it’s nice to see that not all celebrities are completely out of touch. A lot of wealthy people have been able to get special treatment during this time. The pandemic has been able to expose many inequalities in our everyday life that are often ignored in better times such as healthcare, housing, income inequality, and racial health disparities.
1) How are things going for you?
I gave my Mama my phone so that she could hide it from me, because I noticed I was starting to feel unbalanced. That happens when I’m on it too much.
2) Describe your work, noting if there was anything of particular interest
3) Has anything changed since the previous week? If so what? How do you think and/or feel about these changes?
4) Have you been following local news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
There were tornados in South Carolina early Monday morning. I was not near them, but I can’t imagine how scary that must have been for the people who were sleeping in their beds at 5 am. There were 20 tornados! That is just wild. It just compounds everything already going on.
5) Have you been following national or international news about COVID-19 or other important stories? If so, what developments were there? What did learning about these events make you think and/or feel?
There is starting to be some talk about reopening the economy and governors are making plans to reduce social distancing rules to reintegrate society after the virus has subsided for the time being. They are thinking there might be a resurgence in the fall. People are starting to get their government checks (which are not enough for the average American to even pay rent), but I found out that the small business loan program has already run out of money and is no longer accepting applications. The global economy is going to suffer in the short and long term because of this.
6) Is there anything else you would like to add?
I had a nightmare about going to the grocery last night. I haven’t even been to a grocery store in over a week. I’ve hardly left the neighborhood.
